Abstract

We lack comprehensive knowledge about how SARS-CoV-2 mutates in humans. The virologist Andreas Bergthaler and his interdisciplinary team will use high-throughput sequencing and complex computer analysis to decode the entire virus genome of patients. The rapid exchange of data from the first SARS-CoV-2 genomes from Austria provides epidemiologists with important information to reconstruct transmission chains and support political decision-makers, and offer valuable insights into the evolutionary dynamics of the devastating virus pandemic. A better molecular understanding of how mutations arise in the SARS-CoV-2 genome will also support the development of vaccines and antiviral drugs.
