Abstract
This study presents a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the well-being of a vulnerable sample of approximately 1,000 women - predominately African American mothers - who have been surveyed five times over the past 16 years as part of the Resilience in Survivors of Katrina (RISK) study. Several characteristics of the sample suggest their heightened vulnerability to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project will be able to elucidate sources of risk and resilience within a vulnerable population, and, as such, its findings could have implications for policies and practices to mitigate risk among vulnerable adults as the pandemic continues to unfold. The project is innovative in that it draws on the perspectives of an established team of scholars in psychology, social and behavioral sciences, sociology, and urban studies, and thus stands to have a multi-disciplinary impact.
