Abstract

The development of severe COVID-19 is associated with significant lung damage, in which connective tissue formation (fibrosis) can be observed in the lung tissue. This only happens in patients with a very serious course of illness, who usually receive mechanical ventilation in intensive care. In addition to the viral infection, mechanical ventilation may also be a risk factor for fibrosis development.
