Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is excess mortality in the Netherlands. It is unclear what the cause is. This research focuses on the influence of lifestyle on the chance that a person will die during the pandemic. Two possible causes of death are central: death due to a COVID-19 infection and death due to a deteriorating lifestyle during the pandemic. We calculate the chance of dying from both causes. In this way we determine the effect of lifestyle factors on the risk of mortality and excess mortality before and during the pandemic. Our results can be directly used to understand the causes and consequences of excess mortality in the Netherlands. In the future, they can be used to investigate the effects of new mutations of the COVID-19 virus or to evaluate the effects of lifestyle policies on health more generally.
