Abstract

The workshop is part of a broader book project, with the preliminary title "Women in turbulent times. Crises, transitions, and challenges for gender equality", that the main applicant (Prof. Núria Sánchez-Mira, Université de Neuchâtel) is co-editing with Prof. Jill Rubery (University of Manchester) and Dr. Valeria Insarauto (University of Sheffield). The book will bring together 29 scholars and experts from 18 different (academic and non-academic) institutions across European countries and beyond to reflect on the effects that the recent context of multiple crises (Great Recession to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent cost-of-living crisis) and socioeconomic transitions (toward digitalized and decarbonized societies) have had on the reconfiguration of gender inequalities. The book aims to enhance our understanding of how gender relations both shape and are shaped by cyclical and longer-term developments in the economy, in light of the changing boundaries between the market, the family and the state. The long-term outlook across the different crises will highlight the key drivers of the changing nature of gender relations and shed light on the resulting emerging patterns of disadvantage and socio-economic vulnerability across social groups depending on the different economic and societal contexts. Contributions will delve into how gender intertwines with other structures of inequality (such as social class and ethnicity) and cover a wide variety of European countries together with contributions on Australia and the Global South. The main aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for exchange among the editors and authors contributing to the book project, advancing scientific discussion around the overarching theme of the book. In this sense, the workshop represents a crucial opportunity to make the book project really a collective effort that goes beyond the sum of its parts, and hence produces a joint reflection that advances scientific knowledge in the field. Therefore, the aim of the workshop is not only provide a forum for authors to present advanced versions of their contributions and receive feedback by the book editors and their fellow authors. More fundamentally, we also aim through discussion and comparison of the papers to develop an overarching analytical framework for the whole anthology and to identify links and synergies between chapters touching upon close themes. In this way, the workshop and the resulting publication of the book will contribute to nourishing the debates on evolving gender inequalities in contemporary societies, advancing scientific knowledge and outlining new research avenues in the field, and strengthening a network of international scholars working on these topics and fostering new collaborations. The main and eventual outcome of the event will be publication of the book, which will be available in open access, and will be distributed and promoted widely. The publication is likely to be of interest to a wide and diversified audience, encompassing academic researchers in socioeconomics and gender studies, policy experts and advisors on gender equality, and activists, educators and the interested general public to foster awareness and understanding of gender equality across different generations and social groups.
