Abstract

The overall mission of Pitt-MozHRTP is to provide HIV research training opportunities for investigators at Polana Caniço Health Research and Training Center (Centro de Investigação e Treino em Saúde da Polana Caniço, CISPOC) - a key research institution of the Mozambique National Institute of Health that is leading cutting-edge HIV research in the country. The training focuses on the areas of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes mellitus in people with HIV. The ultimate goal of the program is to build HIV research capacity in Mozambique. The training opportunities include PhD and master's degrees (training sites: Stellenbosch University in South Africa or Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique) and post-doctorate fellowship (training sites: University of Pittsburgh in the United States or Stellenbosch University). The collaboration with Stellenbosch University will provide substantially more south-to-south training opportunities between Mozambique and Stellenbosch University, increase HIV comorbidity research capacity, and foster the development of the generation of HIV research mentors in Mozambique.
