Abstract
Continuous genomic surveillance in wastewater allows timely obtaining an overview of the SARS-CoV-2 virus variants currently circulating in Switzerland. This enables the detection of virus variants that carry resistance to vaccination or medications or lead to severe disease courses. In addition, their relative frequencies can be estimated. This is relevant in order to take measures early if necessary. The genomic surveillance includes: - Sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 gene fragments in wastewater samples, - Bioinformatic analysis of the raw sequence data to detect SARS-CoV-2 virus variants and their relative proportions, - Assessment of the applicability of this methodology for other respiratory viruses.
