Abstract
Since May 2022, a global outbreak of monkeypox virus (MPV) has been observed. Unlike previous outbreaks, the transmission chain appears to be continuing among people, particularly men who have sex with men (MSM). One hypothesis for this ongoing transmission is that, contrary to previous assumptions, asymptomatic carriers of the virus exist. These individuals could be driving these transmission chains. The University of Zurich therefore aims to investigate asymptomatic MSM who are at risk for MPV infection. The study results can contribute to improving strategies for containing the virus: Identifying asymptomatic carriers will allow for adjustments to testing recommendations.
