Abstract

Studies in Switzerland and internationally show that the currently circulating SARS-CoV-2 virus variants can be detected in wastewater and can provide valuable insights into the course of the pandemic. The virus is constantly evolving (mutating), and therefore, multiple virus variants usually circulate. Certain variants may have new properties that make them more contagious, lead to more severe disease outcomes, evade the immune response (immune-evasive), or affect the effectiveness of existing testing systems. Therefore, ETH Zurich, in collaboration with the consortium (ETH Zurich, EPFL, Eawag), will continue to provide the technical service of sequencing wastewater samples as part of the national wastewater monitoring program.
