Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was necessary to closely monitor the development and spread of circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants. Virus variants could influence the epidemiological situation by, for example, being more contagious, causing more severe illness, evading immunity after infection or vaccination, or affecting the efficacy of therapies. This grant enabled geographically and demographically representative genome sequencing of 2,000 samples per week. This project was coordinated by the National Reference Centre for Emerging Viral Infections (NAVI/CRIVE) at the University Hospital Graz (HUG). This monitoring allowed for a better assessment of the pandemic's development and also served as a basis for targeted adjustments to measures.
