Abstract
The course of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic is influenced by the circulating strains of the virus. Some strains can have decisive epidemiological characteristics, such as greater contagiousness, more severe disease progression, or reduced vaccine efficacy. In December 2020, strains of the so-called UK variant, or Alpha variant, began circulating, suggesting a potentially more contagious strain. It was urgent to establish a genomic surveillance system by sequencing a number of coronavirus-positive samples. ETH Zurich, through its Science Task Force and Professor Stadler, made its laboratories, resources, and expertise available for this implementation...
