Abstract
Influenza viruses can cause seasonal epidemics and even pandemics. Therefore, influenza is monitored in Switzerland through the voluntary Sentinella surveillance system. However, influenza-like illnesses are not solely caused by influenza viruses, and various influenza types and subtypes exist with differing virulence characteristics. For the timely monitoring of influenza and the timely, situation-appropriate adaptation of recommendations and measures to protect the population, supplementary information on circulating influenza viruses and their changes (antigenic drift, antigenic shift, development of resistance) is crucial. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an additional objective is the virological surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses.
