Abstract
A new coronavirus designated SARS-CoV-2 was discovered at the end of 2019 due to an unusually high number of cases of pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in central China. The currently available information suggests that the virus was transmitted from animals to humans and is now spreading from human to human, leading to a worldwide pandemic. The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), in collaboration with other federal authorities and the responsible cantonal authorities, operates systems for the early detection and monitoring of communicable diseases (EpG, Art. 11). It ensures coordination with international systems. The reporting obligation for this new disease was therefore introduced at the end of January 2020.
