Abstract

CEPI awarded $1 million to Amplitude Therapeutics, a biotech in the US, to explore a potential novel mRNA design. The funding assessed if their trans-amplifying mRNA vaccine approach could provide a simplified alternative to the self-amplifying mRNA vaccine technique being used today and help to more rapidly respond to future outbreak threats. The project met its goals eliciting a proof of concept, with positive efficacy and immunogenicity data were elicited in a range of preclinical models, using an influenza strain as the model pathogen. This highlights its potential use as an upgraded mRNA design that could overcome current challenges with present mRNA technologies and support a rapid response to a future Disease X outbreak. CEPI is now looking at providing further funding to test the technology.
