Abstract

Electronic access to provincial vaccine records is crucial for keeping vaccine information accurate and up-to-date for First Nations (FN) individuals in Alberta, whether they live on or off-reserve. It allows healthcare providers to provide the best care to their clients and to identify those who would benefit from reminders, which are the most powerful way to improve vaccine use among children. Our previous research found several challenges, such as inconsistent record-keeping, delayed data updates, and vaccination gaps made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using automated vaccine record update systems in FN communities is a new and innovative approach in Canada. This system ensures accurate and complete records, and when paired with automatic reminders, it can help increase vaccination rates, lower healthcare costs, and reduce vaccine-preventable diseases. To solve the immunization issues, we suggest a 3 step approach: 1) Automated Record Keeping: By automating vaccine record updates, we can ensure records are accurate and complete. 2) Improved Reminder Systems: Research shows that reminders effectively increase vaccination rates. Currently, reminders in FN communities are not consistently used and are through manual phone calls when they are, which are time-consuming. We suggest using an automated system to send text message reminders, making it easier for families to stay informed. 3) Mobile App for Families: Developing a mobile app will allow families to receive personalized vaccine reminders, talk to their healthcare providers, book appointments, and easily access vaccine history records. This approach, using automated systems and digital tools, aims to strengthen vaccine programs and reduce vaccine-preventable diseases for FN children in Alberta.
