Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that timely signaling, rapid response and well-embedded research infrastructures are essential for effective outbreak control. At the same time, the pandemic showed that delays in research, limited surveillance capacity and insufficient connections to vulnerable groups can limit the effectiveness of measures. Innovative surveillance and diagnostic methods, combined with strong social embedding and targeted communication, are therefore crucial to control future epidemics and pandemics faster and more effectively.
