Abstract

This project is developing and testing an integrated West Nile virus surveillance system in the Canton of Ticino, based on the "One Health" approach. Data concerning mosquitoes, wild birds, horses, and humans are being consolidated to detect early signs of viral circulation. The project encompasses the development of a pilot concept, the involvement of relevant cantonal and national stakeholders, the improvement of communication, the analysis of existing surveillance data, and the assessment of data flows and options for the spatial mapping of risk. The results will provide the foundation for the future national implementation of integrated West Nile virus surveillance and will improve early detection as well as the coordination of measures regarding vector-borne diseases. Total costs: 149,000; under an internal federal service-level agreement, the costs are shared equally between the FOPH (Federal Office of Public Health) and the FSVO (Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office).
